Art, conversation, and celebration

Broken Hill City Art Gallery invites the community to a night of art, conversation, and celebration as it launches three new exhibitions on Friday, 2 May 2025, from 6:00 PM.
The feature exhibition, Journey 7: Journey in Human Landscape Broken Hill, presents a powerful exploration by South Australian artists Kathryn Hill, Robyn Zerna-Russell, Barbara Palmer, and Ray Meandering. As the seventh location in their long-term project, Broken Hill’s landscape - from arid plains and low scrub to historic city streets and the Menindee Lakes- are brought vividly to life. The artists examine the enduring relationship between humanity and place, tracing the ways cultural activity leaves lasting marks on the land and spirit of a region.
Gallery and Museum Manager Kathy Graham said:
“Journey 7 captures the essence of Broken Hill’s story- its resilience, history, and humanity. It’s a moving exhibition that honours the scars left by industry and nature with the resilience and spirit of the people who call it home. We are proud to present such thoughtful and powerful works to our community.”
Joining Journey 7 are two complementary exhibitions:
• Survival Kits for Literary Heroines by Catherine Farry playfully reimagines beloved fictional characters, providing them with symbolic objects to overcome their challenges. Blending compassion, creativity, and literary nostalgia, Farry’s work builds an imaginative bridge between reader and heroine, offering new endings and moments of hope.
• From Away by Em Jensen presents a photographic narrative honouring the often unseen transient population of Broken Hill. Through intimate portraiture and documentary photography, Jensen captures the spirit and contributions of those who pass through the town, shaping its culture, vitality, and evolving identity.
