Flags to fly for NAIDOC Week

Locals are invited to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on Monday at the NAIDOC Flag Raising ceremony.

The annual event sees both peoples' flags raised alongside the Australian flag as a sign of mutual respect and understanding between cultures.

This year's program will feature a didgeridoo performance by Corey Paulson, an acoustic set by Michael Johnstone and Jimmy Soren, and an address from Deputy Mayor, Marion Browne.

The 2019 NAIDOC Week theme is "Voice, treaty, truth - let's work together for a shared future", and Cr Browne said that message is conducive to reconciliation efforts.

"That key message of 'working together' is extremely important; that acknowledgement that the differences between our cultures cannot be solved by one side or the other, but forms a process that requires honest and open dialogue, and understanding from all parties involved," said Cr Browne.

"True unity cannot be achieved unless we have a shared, truthful understanding of the nature of our history, and of how we got to where we stand.

"I'd encourage people from all walks of life to come together on Monday and celebrate a great day of respect, harmony and friendship."

The NAIDOC Flag Raising Ceremony will be held on the Civic Centre Plaza from 10am on July 8.
