Council is offering free fruit fly traps for pensioners as part of ongoing efforts to reduce fruit fly numbers in the city.

The free Envirosafe traps are an initiative of the Fruit Fly Control Working Group that is headed by Councillors Ron Page (Chair), Dave Gallager, and Alan Chandler.

Cr Page said he hoped older locals would take advantage of the program and help tackle fruit fly.

"We know pensioners are doing it tough at the moment, and not all of our older citizens have the money to go out and buy traps," said Cr Page.

"It's often retirees and older people who really care for their garden and fruit trees, so hopefully this will help prevent them from losing their fruit and vegetables in the coming seasons.

"We currently have 100 traps to give away, but if the initiative proves popular we do have scope to order more."

Pensioners wishing to receive a free trap (one per household) are encouraged to contact Cr Page on 0428 288 777, Customer Service on 8080 3300, or e-mail fruitfly@brokenhill.nsw.gov.au to arrange for delivery and setup.
