Markets, gaming, and rock climbing for Youth Week
Published on 13 March 2024
Broken Hill’s younger generations will have a chance to showcase their talents at a Youth Market to be held in Sturt Park on April 19.
The market and activity day is being held from 5.30pm to 8.30pm, and is just one of the events being held to mark Youth Week, which runs from April 14-20.
Young people between the ages of 12-24 are eligible to host a free stall from which they can showcase and sell their art, craft, music, or food creations.
"This is the first time that I can remember where a market day has been purely focused on showcasing younger people's talents, so hopefully we get lots of involvement from the schools and the general public come along and support our young people," said Council’s Community Development Coordinator, Rachel Merton.
"It's an opportunity for young people to hone their performance skills, with musicians, comedians, poetry reading, and drama performances also being sought to enhance the market.
"This can be for beginners or seasoned performers, or even those HSC students studying arts related courses to practice their performances prior to their exams.
"Likewise young people with a flair for drawing, painting, jewellery, craft, culinary skills, cake decorating, face painting etc, the market will provide a space for them to display their wares and portfolios - not everything has to be for sale.
"It takes a lot of effort put one’s creativity on display, so it is a great opportunity for the whole community to support our emerging artists across a whole range of artistic endeavours."
Those wishing to take part in the market or seeking further information are encouraged to contact community.development@brokenhill.nsw.gov.au.
Rock climbing and VR Gaming
Council will also be running an Autumn School Holiday Program, which will include three days of VR gaming at the Civic Centre (April 16-18). Games will include Beat Saber, Mini Golf, Epic Rollercoaster, and much more.
A rock climbing wall will also be installed in Sturt Park on Monday 22 April for those wishing to test their strength and agility.
Both activities are free, however bookings are essential and can be made via Council's Events Calendar. Bookings for VR Gaming sessions can be made here and bookings for rock climbing sessions can be made here.
