Waste services
Broken Hill City Council has a focus on the provision of effective waste services to ensure positive environmental and economic outcomes for the community. Council provides a range of services to the community in waste management, and in late 2012 adopted the 20 Year Integrated Waste Management Strategy to improve our service, following 6 weeks of community consultation. The Broken Hill Waste Management Facility has undergone major changes to allow a shift from waste disposal to a focus on recycling and resource recovery to ensure more sustainable outcomes.
Council operates a waste transfer station and community recycling centre for its residents. To help in the reduction of waste ending up in landfill, we urge residents to separate their waste as much as possible by using the 'drop off' facility provided at our Waste Management Facility in Wills Street.
In 2019, waste disposal charges were introduced for domestic waste loads to improve waste management and disposal techniques in order to reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfill. See the Weighbridge page for details on fees and charges.
Sorted household recyclables can be dropped off at the community recycling centre located at the Waste Management Facility free of charge. Small household problem waste items including globes, smoke detectors, batteries, mobile devices and ink cartridges can also be dropped off at the community recycling centre cabinet located at the Broken Hill City Council.
Broken Hill City Council is one of 28 member councils of the regional network NETWASTE. NETWASTE provides regional based programs and management plans on waste management.
